the specific carbohydrate diet

Due to increased popularity of diets like the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet almost a third of Americans suffering from obesity are cutting carbs from their diets in order to lose weight.

Where did Low-Carbohydrate diets actually come from?

The popular Dr. Atkins diet wasn’t the first commercial low carbohydrate diet. Though the pamphlet didn’t remain popular for very long it wasn’t the end of low carbohydrate dieting. Less than a decade later the low carbohydrate diet made a huge return to popularity. The Atkin’s Diet was no longer a just a diet but soon became a way of life.

The benefits of a low carbohydrate diet quickly became recognizable to more and more individuals as did the demand for various low carbohydrate meal plans and food products. The basic idea of a low carbohydrate diet was to avoid the over consumption of refined carbs which leads to massive storage of body fat. Each diet recognized the harmful way that too much insulin affected our bodies. A low carbohydrate diet should be easily integrated into our current lifestyles.

Good Carbs and Bad Carbs

There are simple carbs and there are complex carbs. Many people simply call them the bad carbs and the good carbs or even the fast carbs and the slow carbs.

Complex Carbohydrates

Complex carbs are found in foods that are high in fiber. Foods that contain complex carbs are among the healthiest you can choose.

Simple Carbohydrates

Simple carbs are found in foods that have a tendency to run right through the digestive system without offering your body very much nutrition at all.

Choosing your Carbs

When choosing to cut carbohydrates from your diet the obvious choice should be the infamous simple carbs. A low carbohydrate diet is very popular these days and a lot of people successfully lose fat with this diet. But there are hidden dangers of low carbohydrate diets that nobody really talks about.

The diet “gurus” tell you that:

reduced carbohydrate, high protein diets are highly thermic.

reducing carbohydrates decreases glycogen, forcing your body to use more fat for fuel.

Most people can lose weight without highly restrictive diets like a low carbohydrate diet for example. So here are some disadvantages of low carbohydrate diets:

- Extremely low carbohydrate diets are difficult to stay on. If you are on a very low carb diet then you are only allowed to eat protein, meat and fat with limited amounts of low calorie carbohydrates such as lettuce, green vegetables and very small portions of natural starches.

- If you basically eliminate carbohydrates from your diet then you can have serious health problems. Carbohydrates are full of essential nutrients and with low carbohydrate diets you can not get the nutrients your body needs. Many low carbohydrate diets suggest eating large amounts of fat, including saturated fats.

- Carbohydrates are your bodies preferred energy and the less carbs you eat the less energy you will have.

- A lot of people confuse “weight loss” with “fat loss.” They are not the same, especially if it comes to low carbohydrate diets.
